After graduating Saint Benoit French High School of Istanbul, Ömer Yiğit Aykan completed his legal studies at Istanbul University Law School in 1993. He was admitted to the Istanbul Bar in 1994. He holds a M.A. degree from Istanbul University, Institute of Social Science on the Legal Structure of EU, as well as an LL.M. from Istanbul Commerce University on International Commercial Law and EU. Mr. Aykan completed a professional training course on International Intellectual Property Law held by Oxford and Victoria Universities at Saint Peters College, Oxford, UK. He received a PIDA training on International Commercial Arbitration held by ICC Training and Conferences Department at the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, France under the auspices of the ICC Institute of World Business Law. He also completed a post lauream training course on International Commercial Arbitration in Private Law, Commercial Law, International Law and Civil Procedure held by Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche – Universita di Firenze (Florence) in cooperation with the ICC – International Court of Arbitration in Florence, Italy.
Mr. Aykan started his career first as a trainee in Aykan Law Firm run by his family, Istanbul. Following his admission to the Istanbul Bar, he worked for two months as an external lawyer in Studio Legale Palmigiano, a reputable law firm in Sicily, Italy. After working in Aykan Law Firm for 10 years first as an associate then as a partner, in 2005 he joined in one of the most powerful law firms in Turkey at that time, to lead a litigation team of 30 lawyers and to give support to the firm especially in the fields of commercial law, mergers & acquisitions, foreign investments, tax law, intellectual property law, employment law and contracts law which all remained his main focuses throughout the following years in parallel with litigation and other matters. In 2010 he became one of the four partners of the firm, and the first outside the family. In 2013, he founded Aykan/Acar/Ergönen Law Firm with his two younger colleagues and continued leading his team with great success in various sophisticated law projects. In 2018 he decided to form a new law firm under an innovative structure and AYKAN&CO came to life.
He, throughout his career as a founder, co-founder, leading partner and partner of various law firms, gained significant experience in many fields of law. He so far led and closed more than 30 M&A deals with great success. Being praised by the Legal 500 (2012) for “having great knowledge and creativity” in corporate law matters and mergers and acquisitions, he has particular experience in many aspects of national and cross-border M&A transactions, investments, real estate transactions and international contracts and also in representing his clients in litigation matters involving commercial transactions, unfair competition, intellectual property and labor law. He so far advised and is still advising many clients in various sectors among which are healthcare companies, technology companies, print and visual media companies, airlines as well as various foreign and Turkish industrial and commercial enterprises and start-ups.
